Artist's Comments

One of the latest experiments in combining sparks with conventional studio lighting. In concept simple enough, but quite a bit more difficult than it might first seem. Bridging a more 3D look was much of the goal here. I have to confess to being fascinated with the idea of shooting a darker skinned model in this medium, and Michael Foster was perfect.

The shot is certainly not without its flaws, but I like it. There were plenty of takes with more spectacular sparks, better control of the radius, and cleaner execution. Something about his expression while engulfed in the blaze just makes me love it anyway.

If you look closely you can see the drawstring to his sweat pants, just one of many shots contributing to our new motto "Play it safe. Drop Trou."

Single exposure, 100% through the lens.
ZERO PHOTOSHOP

Model: Michael Foster
Location: ^Battledress studios
Special thanks to Lee Berczel for operating the spark thrower where no man should ever have to go, and big round of applause for ^wynnesome and the crew involved in the creation of this shot.

Disclaimer: Okay, you all should know this by now. Seriously, don't try this at home. Or anywhere else.

It's our own rather interesting new application of the "Safety First" principle, hm?

I should be sleeping. :sigh: So should you! But. Glad to see this posted. Nice little bit of cheer after returning to some unpleasant business crap tonight. Gets me down all too easily and I hate it all the more for that.

This stuff is so much nicer to think about.

Should be sleeping, too. Still on the creative high from the shoot today. Well, that and wired from a Mountain Dew overdose. . . .

Gunna post a few more tonight, including some of the behind the scenes shot. Maybe.

Pain is fleeting. A picture lasts forever.

Keep posting... pretty please?

C'mon... I could stand some more cheering... have to deal with the less pleasant stuff few enough hours from now. Would rather hang out and see the fantastic images go up, till then.

Sorry about the Mountain Dew overdose... I guess that part's my fault! :)

Ah, you know it's all a set-up anyway.

Nope, I got to post the one of Adam adjusting the hammer for this image, as you probably saw in my account. :)
