Artist's Comments

Taken on my very first photo shoot with Crow, and in truth, the first time I'd picked up a camera since I was a teenager. Borrowed gear, foam core reflector, and not a clue how to use either.

Originally intended to be reference shots for a comic book, the shoot took us out into the desert and an abandoned quarry on Indian land. A brief encounter with the owners and we had permission to enter the area for the day. Little did we know what we would find.

Two dead horses. Still pretty meaty. Crow and I were overjoyed, though my wife (helping with the shoot) was not particularly thrilled. After some prying the skull came free, and Crow with matter-of-fact glee pronounced the deceased to be "Bob", the dead horse.

This is Crow at her most personal. She walked around with a bone in one hand and a Mountain Dew in the other for hours, eventually taking home a box of bones to eh, "clean" in her oven. Her apartment complex never smelled the same. . . . .

Model: Crow

When cleaning bones, I would like suggest a bath of water and bleach, at a ratio of about 3-1 - but no longer than overnight. The bones come out a wonderful bleached white, and are easy to clean, but will get very dry. After that, some small amount of suppleness can be restored to the bones with a longer bath in vegetable oil. Some folk suggest vinegar, but that tends to damage the bones a bit too much. This method smells a lot better than cooking off the flesh, and is somewhat more sanitary.

That is beyond disgusting, but I can see my friend *NayaShardez doing the exact same thing. She was my first model, and we used to just wander around with outfits such as the one Crow was wearing here, and look for places to take photos.

I love it.

When I moved from my goat farm in the sticks to the city, I had to take a little piece of home with me. So I gathered up some of the goat bones and now they lie in a bag under my bed. I might use them for a sculpture, or maybe just have them around me for as long as possible.

This is very awesome and the photo reminds me of home :)

I don't know why i like it so much, but i do.
The details make it unusually disordered, which is may be it's bigest charm, it looks like it's just a shot between 2 other shots.
Wonderful contrast.
